WHAT IS THE HAMBURG TRIBUNAL ABOUT?
The Hamburg Tribunal gives a voice to those affected.
Using concrete examples of war crimes and human rights violations from northern Syria (Rojava), Mexico and Colombia, Yemen and Africa, global impacts of arms shipments through Hamburg are made clearly visible and negotiated in the Tribunal.
Currently, we see the devastating effects of war "on our doorstep" and follow the images of suffering and death on a daily basis.
In contrast, the consequences of wars and armed conflicts are hardly in the public focus. The wars in Syria, Yemen, as well as armed conflicts in Africa or South America were and are hardly noticed. We do not yet know how the Ukraine war will develop, but due to careful research we know what has happened in other wars and conflict regions, which rights have been violated and which mechanisms fuel violence and who profits from it.
We organize several events and educational offers to discuss and inform about these issues.
The port of Hamburg is one of the largest hubs for arms exports worldwide. Already from 2013 to 2018, armoured combat vehicles, warships and other armaments worth more than 2.5 billion euros went through the Port of Hamburg to the world, and since then arms exports have steadily increased. Which wars and conflicts have they served?
We want Hamburg - as defined in the Hamburg constitution as well - to act as a "mediator of peace" and contribute to the worldwide observance of human rights and international law. In the course of the tribunal, responsibility for arms production, arms transports and the devastating consequences of the use of weapons will be named. In addition, proposals will be developed on how legal control and international law can be strengthened and conflict healing pursued, as well as how the right to peace can be enforced in the long term.
